The Beginning

In 1955, Gene Hagemann set up shop in the back of a local hardware store in Racine, Wisconsin. He had a passion for woodworking, antique restoration and refurbishing old clock cabinets. Before long, he became known for producing high quality custom kitchens, doors, windows, and spiral staircases as well as jigs for some of Racine’s largest manufacturers including Modine, J I Case and Dremel.

By 1962, Gene’s reputation for outstanding craftsmanship and demand for his work had outgrown his modest space in the back of the store. He purchased a building in Racine large enough for a shop with employees and a showroom for NuWood custom cabinetry. In the following years, all of Gene’s five children worked for the family business as did his wife and her sister.

The Next Generation

In 1986, Phil Hagemann took over NuWood from his father and continued the family tradition of quality American craftsmanship. Eleven years later, under Phil’s leadership, NuWood purchased the former Badger Woodworking building. As NuWood continued to grow, additional work and storage space allowed for more employees as well as a larger showroom and a shipping dock. Over the years, NuWood has continually upgraded materials and construction to ensure that there is no better product on the market.

The Tradition Continues Under New Ownership

In 2017, Ryan Konicek purchased NuWood Cabinets. With an extensive background in construction and remodeling, he intends to grow the business through new management practices and an online marketing strategy while also offering new products and services to NuWood’s customers.
